Argon: Protective Measures and Emergency Response

Since argon is a non-toxic gas, special protective measures are generally not required; however, if the oxygen concentration in the workplace atmosphere falls below 18%, it is mandatory to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus or an airline respirator. In the event of significant inhalation, the affected individual should be immediately removed from the contaminated area to a location with fresh air; ensure the airway remains clear, and administer oxygen if breathing difficulties occur.

If breathing and heartbeat cease, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) must be initiated immediately, and medical assistance should be sought. Direct contact with liquid argon may cause frostbite; therefore, appropriate protective gear must be worn. Should frostbite occur, the affected area should be flushed with copious amounts of water; do not remove clothing, and provide immediate medical care. Apply a clean, dry dressing to the injury and seek medical attention.
